20206 RA Dinghy Training and Regatta Report

Despite a demanding operational programme across the Royal Artillery, this year’s Dinghy Sail Training Week once again demonstrated the Army’s commitment to developing leadership, resilience and adventurous training opportunities for its people.

Six personnel undertook the RYA Start Sailing Level 1 course under the instruction of Bombardier Jack Harrison, supported by Major Stu Deakin as the on-water safety officer. Conditions at the start of the week provided a real baptism of fire, with winds reaching 20–25 knots. Fortunately, favourable tides and the shelter provided by the AISTC(S) and TISC clubhouses allowed the students to quickly gain confidence and rapidly develop their sailing skills.

As is often the case, race day brought very different conditions, with lighter winds shifting the challenge from staying upright to reaching the start line against strong harbour tides. The Level 1 sailors were joined by experienced competitors Bombardiers Jack Harrison and Carl Lilly of 16 Regiment RA, together with Ben Baker of 14 Regiment RA.

The regatta consisted of four races: an Individual Race, Team Race, Elimination Race and the traditional Race Home. While experience ultimately proved decisive, the newly trained sailors from 4 Regiment RA demonstrated great determination, enthusiasm and considerable promise for the future.

Three trophies were contested during the event:

Barrons Cup (Best JNCO)
Winner: Bombardier Jack Harrison (16 Regiment RA)

RA Dinghy Trophy
1st – Bombardier Jack Harrison (16 Regiment RA)
2nd – Bombardier Carl Lilly (16 Regiment RA)
3rd – Ben Baker (14 Regiment RA)

RA Team Trophy
4 Regiment RA – Lance Bombardier Connor Zekri, Gunner Jake Hallam, Gunner Billy Whitely, Gunner Dan Robinson and Gunner Herbie Hoban.

Congratulations to all competitors, instructors and organisers for delivering another successful week of training and racing on the water.
