St Barbara V Continues Her Mediterranean Adventure

St Barbara V continues to enjoy an exciting Mediterranean deployment as part of Ex Med Ubique 2026, providing Royal Artillery personnel with valuable sailing experience and unforgettable adventures.

One recent leg began in Barcelona, with the yacht departing in calm conditions for Toulon. With little wind available, the crew focused on training, including man overboard drills, while enjoying sightings of dolphins, a shark and several sunfish during the crossing of the Gulf of Lion. Following their first overnight passage, the crew arrived in Toulon for some well-earned rest ashore.

Further east, another crew sailed along the French Riviera. An intended stop in Antibes became an extended passage when no berths were available, resulting in an evening arrival in Monaco. The following day offered an opportunity to explore some of the principality’s famous landmarks before St Barbara V headed onwards towards Corsica.

The overnight crossing brought strong winds and spectacular lightning storms, followed by an idyllic anchorage near Plage du Lotu, where crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery tempted some of the crew to suggest staying for the rest of the summer. Engine issues later required a precautionary stop in Calvi for investigation and replenishment before continuing the voyage.

Throughout the deployment, crews have developed seamanship, teamwork and leadership skills while enjoying some of the finest sailing waters in Europe. Good humour has remained a constant feature of life on board, helped by plenty of music, laughter and the occasional dance performance from Roger Shapland.

St Barbara V still has several Mediterranean legs planned during July and August before beginning her journey home. The current plan is for her to return to UK waters in time to take part in the prestigious Yarmouth Regatta in September, bringing an unforgettable Mediterranean adventure to a fitting conclusion.
