The RA sail training week will be held from 14 to 17 July 25 at the Army Inshore Sail Training Centre (South) [AISTC(S)], Thorney Island. The event is open to all serving members of the Regiment. The week consists of an RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing course using Fusion dinghies, culminating in a racing regatta. All students in this course will be automatically entered into the RA Dinghy Regatta as individuals and will form part of their Unit team, thereby counting towards the RA Inter Unit Dinghy Competition. Regiments are also asked to enter a double-handed entry for the Asymmetric Regatta in Laser/RS2000s. Qualification for the Regatta will consist of both single and double-handed teams.
Aim of Week
The aim of the sail training and regatta week are: a) To introduce soldiers and officers to dinghy sailing and water sports available within the Gunners and wider Army. b) To form the basis of a RA development dinghy squad to feed Gunner and Army-level racing.
RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing Course
Individuals who wish to bid for the RYA Level 1/Level 2 Start Sailing/Basic Sailing course at AISTC(S) are to apply online at the link below. A breakdown of costs per individual is shown below:
- £85 course fees
- £9 per night accommodation (sleeping bags required)

RA Dingy Regatta
- All Regiments are expected to enter a team for the RA Dinghy Regatta.Regimental Teams must consist of 3 single-handed entries (incl L1/2 course participants) and 1x double-handed entry.
- Double-handers (L2Ks) must be helmed by a min. RYA L2 Dinghy qualified individual (or deemed competent by AISTC staff), crew may be novice, but are encouraged to be loaded from the L1/L2 course. Race-conditions dependent; it is expected that L2Ks will use asymmetric spinnakers. There are 8 avaialbe L2Ks; entries be on a first-come-first-served basis. Gaps may be met by privately-owed dinghys on presentation of correct insurance to AISTC(S).

Prize Giving and Members BBQ 17th July
All members of the Club (serving and retired) are invited to attend a members BBQ on the 17th July….to watch some of the racing and to attend the Club’s annual prize giving. This will be combined with the prize giving of the main dinghy regatta.
