Five Royal Artillery soldiers took part in EX NOVIZIO KITE 26, the Army Kitesurfing Development Team’s principal overseas training exercise of 2026, held at the renowned Lo Stagnone lagoon in Sicily. Representing the Regiment were WO1 Baz Pryor, Sgt Jay Kerrison, LBdr Travis Sawyer, Gnr Lewis Toms and Gnr Liam Stuart, who joined soldiers from across the Army to develop their kite surfing skills in one of Europe’s finest training locations.

With warm, shallow water, a sandy bottom and reliable winds throughout the week, conditions were ideal for rapid progression. Novice riders, coached by the highly experienced Pro Kite Alby Rondina school, progressed from basic kite handling to confidently riding on the board by the end of the camp. Meanwhile, the intermediate group, led by Army instructors, refined their upwind riding, transitions and overall board control. LBdr Travis Sawyer also assisted with delivering training alongside Capt Gaz Fairbairn RE, demonstrating the depth of expertise within the team.

The exercise highlighted the value of adventurous training in developing confidence, resilience and teamwork outside the traditional military environment. The Royal Artillery Yacht Club was proud to support the exercise with a £1,000 grant, helping to enable Royal Artillery personnel to take part in this outstanding training opportunity. Additional support from the Army Sports Lottery, Army Sailing Association and other organisations ensured the continued success of EX NOVIZIO KITE 26, demonstrating the importance of investing in soldiers’ personal development through Army sport.
