RA Dinghy Training Week and Regatta 18-21 May 2026

The Royal Artillery Sail Training Week and Dinghy Regatta returns to the Army Inshore Sail Training Centre at Thorney Island from 18–21 May 2026. This year’s event has been deliberately brought forward in the calendar to help identify and develop sailors with the potential to progress into the Army Dinghy Squad, reinforcing the Regiment’s commitment to competitive sailing and adventurous training.

The week offers a superb opportunity for both novices and more experienced sailors. Those new to the sport can undertake the RYA Level 1 and Level 2 Start Sailing course, gaining nationally recognised qualifications while learning the fundamentals in a supportive, coached environment. The course culminates in participation in the RA Dinghy Regatta, where individuals will represent their units as part of a wider inter-regimental competition. For more experienced sailors, the regatta provides a platform to test racing skills in both single-handed and double-handed classes, with asymmetric boats expected to feature prominently depending on conditions.

Regiments are encouraged to enter full teams, combining developing sailors from the training course with more experienced helms in the double-handed fleet. A dedicated training day ahead of the regatta will allow crews to refine their techniques under the guidance of experienced Service sailors, ensuring a competitive and enjoyable racing programme. The event not only promotes sailing excellence but also strengthens teamwork, resilience, and leadership across the Regiment.

The aim is not simply to run a successful regatta, but to build a sustainable pipeline of Gunner sailors who can represent the Royal Artillery and the Army at the highest level. With accessible entry, subsidised training, and strong coaching support, the Sail Training Week remains one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to get involved in Army sailing.
