From 1–7 September 2025, an all-ranks crew from 16 Regiment Royal Artillery took to the waters of the Solent for a week of sail training, culminating in a strong showing at the Royal Artillery Offshore Regatta in Yarmouth.
Sailing aboard White Knight 7, a 35-foot J/109 class, the crew was skippered by SSgt Max Wilkinson, with John Johnston as First Mate. The team also included LBdr Andy Healey, LBdr Holly Froom, Cpl Sam Turner, Gnr Finlay Poole, and Cpl Rana-Hume.

Throughout the week, they were supported by RA Bosun Ed Middleton, who delivered expert instruction and helped guide the novices through the Competent Crew syllabus in preparation for the regatta.
The week’s itinerary saw White Knight 7 make calls at Cowes, Yarmouth, and Lymington, giving the crew a mix of training and real sailing experience. The hard work paid off: the crew secured the Admiral’s Cup for the winning regimental entry, while skipper SSgt Wilkinson was also awarded the Solent Trophy for youngest skipper.

Reflecting on the achievement, SSgt Wilkinson praised the effort of his crew: “All the troops had a fantastic week on board. It was brilliant to see novices progress so quickly, and to come away with silverware was the perfect end to a memorable regatta. Everyone is keen to get back on the water.”
The experience not only showcased the Regiment’s adaptability and teamwork, but also reinforced the opportunities available through adventurous training – bringing together soldiers of different ranks and backgrounds to tackle new challenges side by side.
